Beach Barber Tract history
The Beach Barber Tract was known as Neptunia in the 1800’s. According to SD News , the community’s name didn’t change until Phillip Barber was taken aback by the area and decided to purchase and develop the land. He moved his family to La Jolla, and with the help of fine architects, built beautiful homes in the community. Many of Beach Barber’s historic European revival style homes date back to the 1900’s and were crafted during this development. According to La Jolla Light, homes built in Beach Barber from 1920 to 1940 were the work of esteemed architects, such as Edgar V. Ullrich, Tom Shepherd, Herbert Palmer, Requa & Jackson, Florence Palmer and others.
An article in SD News stated that prior to becoming a developer in La Jolla, Phillip Barber was heir to a steamship firm. La Jolla reminded Barber of a vacation spot he visited and was fond of in Long Island, NY. His former Spanish Colonial home is in Beach Barber, seated alongside Storybook English Tudor and French Normandy style homes. The great depression was tough on the developer, but the homes he built stood the test of time. Today, the Beach Barber Tract has many historic homes with inspired architecture and charming gardens.
