Hillcrest has a high population density compared to many other neighborhoods in San Diego. Hillcrest is an older neighborhood which has gone through gentrification. Many streets are lined with trees. There are Craftsman homes and Mid-Century modern apartment buildings. The community association supports most beautification projects in the neighborhood, stewards the iconic Hillcrest sign, organizes street festivals, runs the Hillcrest Farmers Market, and it sponsors the annual "Taste of Hillcrest," which offers food and drink samples from over 50 local bars and restaurants. Hillcrest offers an authentic, local San Diego vibe, where locals and travelers alike mingle to enjoy the colorful community offerings. Nearby Hillcrest is the historic Balboa Park. Built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition and expanded in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exhibition. Balboa Park is the largest urban park in North America, home to 85 museums and cultural institutions. Walk along the main promenade to see water fountains, gorgeous Victorian architecture, stunning and colorful gardens. It is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
